At most digital marketing companies, every team member contributes to the organization’s revenue. I always like to point this out, because some people forget it.
They claim the team does nothing, asking, “How can we get them to do their jobs?”
In reality, they are doing something: they’re asking for the product. They’re asking you for it, which means they’re doing something. So let’s show them some love and respect. A good culture
is what helps the team feel good, regardless of the results.
Example: Gym owners
Gym owners understand that customers should feel comfortable working with them and see progress in their fitness. I often use this analogy,
But I want to repeat it so as many people as possible can hear it.
So fitness center owners understand this better than most corporate leaders do Digital marketing—if those leaders did what fitness center owners do,
they’d see significant progress.
When I walk into a fitness center, work out on a machine for 7 minutes, then go eat 2,200 calories in the form of a chocolate bar and a milkshake
with peanut butter and a banana, the owner won’t pull me aside and say, “You’re not going to get results this way. How can I motivate you more? Or how can I get you
“For a better result?” Have you ever seen a gym owner do that? No one does—because you pay for your membership, and that’s what matters to them.
You might think this is unethical, but especially if you’re a new leader, you need to realize that people can make themselves happy, whether they make money from your company or not. What may upset them and drive them away is pulling them aside and saying something like a gym owner might: “
“This shirt isn’t flattering because it doesn’t show off your muscles,” or “What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you seem enthusiastic?”
They’re great, and they feel valued—as do the money they spend each month, of course, if they’re members.
.
How do you get them excited?
You can’t force your team to feel excited. But you can set an example of what you’d like your partners to become. The best way to get your team
excited is to build a new team, rather than playing the savior and saying, “Get excited, guys—you can do this.” Instead, continually bring fresh blood
into the team. Welcome new people and show them how you do it.
If you see that some of them are ready to work, hold on to them and give them something to do. Get their attention and point them toward the tools, the system, the training archive, or any
If you use something and think they should use it too, this is the right way to approach them.
