Self-defeating behavior can set us all back at some point in a project, sometimes bringing progress and work to a halt. To overcome self-defeating behavior
or help your employees do so, first identify the type so you know how to address it. There are eight types of self-defeating behavior, which can be addressed
as follows:
.
Controlling the conversation
You may think everyone is listening to your endless ideas. To find out, take another look: if you’re speaking for others and constantly steering the conversation,
that’s not behavior befitting a good leader or team member.
.
تجنب المخاطر
Many of us are dominated by catastrophic thinking about potential risks, while failure is often not as frightening as we imagine. Avoiding risks means
You’ll never get everything right, so you need to trust your own judgment about which risks are sometimes worth taking. Share your ideas with your manager before you
تخوض المغامرة.
.
Procrastination
Most of us procrastinate at some point. If you’re dreading a particular task, look for ways to make it more manageable. If it’s complex, create
a plan for how you’ll tackle it. If it’s boring, set aside a regular time each day to work on it, then carry on with the rest of your day as usual.
.
Avoiding difficult conversations
Difficult conversations don’t get easier when you avoid or end them—in fact, the opposite is true. Try to see them as an opportunity to grow. Approach them with empathy
for the other person and try to understand their perspective. You may be surprised by what you can learn together.
.
ضيق الرؤية
Narrow-mindedness is a common form of self-defeat, according to Philip G. Decker and Jordan Paul Mitchell in القيادة Psychologically, this means focusing extremely narrowly
on a single task or role, preventing you from seeing the big picture. For example, we sometimes see this at work when a manager is focused on
finishing a particular task and becomes angry, shouting at anyone who comes near, unaware of the negative impact their behavior has on others—whether on personal relationships
or workplace culture. Work Environment.
.
Doing some work tasks from home
If you take work-related matters home with you, you reduce your mental clarity at work. You may think that the more time you spend doing
your work, the more likely you are to get it done. That’s not true: at some point, you need to recharge, so give yourself that time.
.
Not delegating certain tasks to others
The need to do or control everything wastes your time and sends others the message that you don’t trust them. Micromanagement is one form of
failing to delegate enough. If you monitor everyone too closely, you won’t be able to delegate work to anyone.
.
Failing to ask for feedback
Fear of feedback holds you back. You may be afraid to find out what others think of you, or worry that you’ll be criticized for asking for advice, even though
we all need advice—including executives. Whatever your shortcomings, you can overcome them in just a few months if you ask for
feedback.
.
ثلاث خطوات
Here are three steps to help you break self-defeating habits:
Identify the causes of this behavior and when it arises, so you can recognize it from the outset.
Ask someone whose advice you trust, and tell them about the behavior you’re working to overcome.
Identify the steps needed to establish a new pattern. Visualize the behavior you want to work on, and write yourself reminders.
.
Avoid replacing one self-defeating behavior with another. Philip and Mitchell warn that this is a common tendency, giving the example of
someone who avoids anger by steering clear of conflict.
