Lerner was born in 1955 in Oberville, Virginia, and grew up on a farm in northern California. She attended schools in the state and then earned a degree in <\/span><\/p>\n

Claremont Graduate School in 1977 and a master\u2019s degree in statistics and computer science from Stanford University in 1981. She later received <\/span><\/p>\n

honorary doctorates from Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Southampton in England.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1984, Lerner served as director of computer facilities at Stanford University\u2019s Graduate School of Business. She then co-founded Cisco Systems with her husband, <\/span><\/p>\n

Leonard Bosack. Together, they designed the first router capable of connecting incompatible computer systems and created the protocols S0SCO and S0GSB, which <\/span><\/p>\n

topped the list of leading computer programs. Lerner served on the company\u2019s board of directors and as vice president of manufacturing. She and her husband then appointed John <\/span><\/p>\n

Morridge became the company\u2019s CEO in 1988. Lerner was fired from the company in 1990, and her husband resigned in support of her. They sold <\/span><\/p>\n

their shares in the company for US$170 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

2000. In 1995, she bought a large farm in Virginia, which operates sustainably and profitably, producing local meats and organic <\/span><\/p>\n

natural products. The farm sells its products online and allocates some of its revenue to educating and raising awareness among children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lerner invested some of her profits in shares in Capital and Partners Limited. In 2000, the French luxury goods company Louis<\/span><\/p>\n

Vuitton acquired the company. She took part in a number of technological and charitable activities. In 1992, she helped restore Chawton House in Hampshire, England,<\/span><\/p>\n

which opened in 2003 as a center for the study of women\u2019s writing. The Chawton House Library, which Lerner helped restore, contains more than <\/span><\/p>\n

nine thousand books on women\u2019s literary works, as well as original manuscripts. The library works in partnership with the University of Southampton, which awarded Lerner an honorary <\/span><\/p>\n

doctorate in recognition of her work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lerner held several positions, including teaching in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University and in the Department of Public Administration at the University of <\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, she founded ZKL Systems and Networks and serves as its CEO and chief engineer. She also helped found Sono Luminous, where she is <\/span><\/p>\n
