\u201cIf not for technological backwardness, my life would have been a mistake.\u201d That\u2019s how billionaire Kim Beom-su \uae40\ubc94\uc218, South Korea\u2019s most successful entrepreneur,<\/span><\/p>\n \u2014at age 52\u2014summed up his life in a few simple words after joining Forbes\u2019 list of the world\u2019s richest people.<\/span><\/p>\n Born to parents who did not complete advanced levels of formal education, he went on to become a legend in business and finance, with a fortune of more than $2.5 billion, <\/span><\/p>\n thanks to his achievements in the internet industry, a space dominated by a handful of huge conglomerates run by the \u201cchaebol\u201d \uc7ac\ubc8c families.<\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n Kim Beom-su grew up in abject poverty. His family of eight shared a single bedroom in a poor neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea\u2019s capital.<\/span><\/p>\n His parents moved from job to job to make ends meet. In the process, he achieved a family milestone by becoming the first to attend college; he was <\/span><\/p>\n He tutored to earn money to help him continue his studies, graduating from the College of Industrial Engineering in 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n Beom-su says of his childhood: \u201cWe had to find our own way because my parents didn\u2019t have time to take care of us, so we had a great deal of independence,<\/span><\/p>\n which taught me the importance of responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The hardships Kim Beom-soo faced growing up fueled his drive to invest more in his creative potential, while remaining humble.<\/span><\/p>\n He has a modest office in southern Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n Kim Beom-soo began his career developing online communications services with the IT services division of global company Samsung, <\/span><\/p>\n but his constant desire to do better led him to leave after just five years, open an internet caf\u00e9, and start developing online social casino games.<\/span><\/p>\n Although he avoided computer games as a child, he was drawn to them as a young adult. He says, \u201cThe technological lag I experienced in my childhood helped me <\/span><\/p>\n develop a different personality that enabled me to figure out solutions for myself. Those games help people learn problem-solving skills by developing creative strategies, <\/span><\/p>\n and working with others to protect your castles, for example.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n In 1998, Hangame\u2014the first online gaming site in South Korea\u2014attracted a large number of visitors. It was later merged with the search engine <\/span><\/p>\n Naver to become NHN, the dominant web portal.<\/span><\/p>\n Kim Beom-su worked day and night as an entrepreneur and programmer, torn between pride in his present and fear of a future fraught with the risk of failure, <\/span><\/p>\n and being unable to pay his employees\u2019 salaries.<\/span><\/p>\n Kim\u2014who had become president of the Korea Association of Game Industry\u2014moved to Silicon Valley in 2005 to build his company in the United States, but discovered <\/span><\/p>\n It was stricter than expected, so he resigned in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n As his creativity was drawing its last breath in California, he returned to South Korea with some colleagues, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone, which captured <\/span><\/p>\n his attention and planted the seed of hope for a new venture.<\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n In 2010, Kim Beom-su launched KakaoTalk \uce74\uce74\uc624\ud1a1, a chat and messaging app now used by three-quarters of South Korea\u2019s <\/span><\/p>\n 50 million people.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2014, Kakao merged with Daum Communications, a competitor to Naver. The merger provided a broader budget for expanding into new business areas, including <\/span><\/p>\n Mobile banking and taxi services.<\/span><\/p>\n After launching KakaoTalk, Kim continued to devote time to his personal ambition of building 100 technology startups. Through his two venture capital firms, he had already invested in more than 70 <\/span><\/p>\n startups.<\/span><\/p>\n KakaoTalk struggled to grow its user base beyond its home market and saw limited success overseas\u2014until it gained traction in Southeast Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n Despite its success, the app came under scrutiny from the South Korean government, sparking considerable controversy over the monitoring of digital communications;<\/span><\/p>\n in 2015, it complied with South Korean authorities\u2019 orders to monitor the messages of suspects.<\/span><\/p>\n .<\/p>\n Kim Beom-su was keen to offer advice to young entrepreneurs, saying, \u201cFailed experiments at small companies often lead to better outcomes in <\/span><\/p>\n both business and life. Entrepreneurs should therefore risk everything for what they believe in, increasing their chances of excelling through experiences that <\/span><\/p>\n create the right conditions for success.
